Education

 

He holds a Doctoral degree (DMA) of the State University of New-York at Stony Brook, where he studied with pianist Gilbert Kalish.

 

He earned his Master and Bachelor degrees at the Rubin Academy in Tel-Aviv, under the guidance of Prof. Arie Vardi, Prof. Victor Derevianko and Naomi Lev.

   

Academic position

 

Mr. Lev is the head of the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music at Tel-Aviv University (in cooperation with the Israel Philharmonic) Israel most prestigious institution for high education in music.

In the last seasons Tomer Lev was heard in four continents in such cities as New York, Tokyo, Prague, Beijing, Hamburg, Buenos-Aires, Montreal, Madrid, Toronto, Boston, Zurich, Strasbourg, San-Paulo, Tel-Aviv, Shanghai, San Diego, throughout Germany, Spain & England. He was also heard in major international festivals such as Tanglewood, Norfolk, Madrids San-Isidro, Sofia Music Weeks, Varna Summer, the Israel Festival, Istanbul CRR international piano festival, and others. He has also recorded for leading TV & radio stations in the USA, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Eastern Europe & Israel.

 

Mr. Lev has collaborated with all major Israeli orchestras. His critically acclaimed debut with the Israel Philharmonic under the baton of Zubin Mehta led to further collaborations with the IPO, as well as to performances with the Jerusalem Symphony - Israeli Radio Orchestra, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the Israeli Camerata, the Israeli Sinfonietta, the Haifa Symphony, among others.

 

Mr. Lev is a winner of several international prizes and awards, including the Maria Callas international piano competition (Athens), the Awajishima international competition (Japan) and the Clairmont awards (Tel Aviv). In 1990 he received a certificate of distinction from the chairman of the Israeli parliament for his achievements in music. In 1998 he was awarded the Gina Bachauer Prize by the America-Israel Cultural Foundation for an outstanding achievement in performance.

 

Last seasons' highlights in Israel included six concerts with the Israel Philharmonic (as soloist in Scriabin's "Prometheus", in its original audio-visual score) and his own critically acclaimed series of concerts at Tel-Aviv's leading concert venue, the Tel Aviv Museum. Seasons 1998-99 & 1999-2000 were culminated by Tomer Lev`s own multi-disciplinary retrospective series The Twentieth Century  Farewell, in collaboration with the Israeli Camerata Orchestra & Musica Nova Consort.

 

Mr. Lev has recorded several compact discs, including a solo album of Israeli contemporary music (part of Psanterin Anthology of Israeli art music) and a world premiere recording of Ludwig Thuille`s Piano Quintets (Sanctuary Records/ASV, London 2004). Both recordings were critically acclaimed, the latter was referred to as ecstatic beauty by the worldwide acclaimed Strad magazine.
